Frequently Asked Questions:

What do you do to my clock?

We service your clock to remove old, dried up oil that is no longer protecting and lubricating the moving parts. This is necessary because over time, elements of the oil evaporate and it changes into a sticky mess. This takes time, depending on temperature and location. Repairs often have to be made, however these are usually simple and not expensive.

How do I know if my clock needs servicing?

If your mechanical clock is over 5 years old or has not been serviced for over 4 years and is kept in a usually warm or centrally heated room then it probably needs servicing.

If your clock is stopping randomly, not keeping time, stopping earlier than usual or is loosing time, then it needs servicing.

If your clock is valuable and you can’t remember when it was last serviced or repaired and is in regular use, you should have it serviced to ensure it is not wearing out and sustaining damage.

How much will it cost?

We do our best to charge you a fair price. If you know your clock type, please see our Prices page. This gives you an indication of the price. The final price we charge depends on the extent of repairs necessary - usually, very little repair is required. We will give you an estimate. We will never proceed with repairs beyond that estimate without your approval.

How do you operate?

Please contact us. We will discuss your needs and if you agree, we will come to your location and inspect your clock and offer you a no obligation estimate.

If you accept this, we will give you a receipt for the clock and take it to our workshop and begin repairs. We will keep you informed of progress by e-mail (or phone call if you wish).

We will then call you when it is completed and arrange to visit and set up at your location.

How do I pay you?

We accept cash, personal cheque and soon, credit-card. Contact me for this option.
Payment is made on return of the clock unless extensive repairs are required, in which case, a payment of 50% of the estimate is required. If paying by personal cheque, this must have cleared before payment will be considered made.

Is there a charge for pick up and return of my clock?

If you live with in 20 miles of Steyning, for example Arundel, there is no charge, except for “Take a Look” repairs. Beyond this distance, we may request payment of £0.15 per mile for each trip. If you wish to bring you clock to us then please contact us to make an appointment.

What happens if there is a problem with my clock after your repair?

All our work is guaranteed for 12 months. We fully inspect and photograph the movement of the clock before and after services and / or repairs are made. We also make a brief report available to you. If the cause of the problem is related to our actions, we will free of charge, correct the issue. If, however, there is a new, unrelated problem then we will assist you to correct the problem as cost effectively as possible. It is our desire to have happy customers, we will always do your best for you.

Is our clock insured while being serviced?

It is your responsibility to insure your clock while it is with Sussex Clock Services. Currently, we cannot insure your clock due to the wide variation in type, value and heritage of our customers clocks. If your clock is considered valuable we suggest you inform your Insurance Company of your intentions. Many do cover this activity. Your clock will always be in a secure environment.

Do you use strong chemicals during servicing?

We do not use ammonia based cleaning fluids. Where possible we use ultrasonic cleaning fluids and mild organic solvents (not Benzene!) and mild polishes.

How long does it take?

We endeavour to complete your clock in under four weeks if only typical repairs are required. If, due to workload or the extent of repairs necessary or spare parts or materials have to be ordered, we will discuss this with you. Please make any special deadlines known to use as soon as possible and we will see what we can do!
